ആഭ്യന്തര പ്രശ്‌നം, പ്രകൃതി ദുരന്തം തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രശ്‌നങ്ങളില്‍പ്പെട്ട് നട്ടം തിരിയുകയാണ് നമ്മുടെ അയല്‍ രാജ്യമായ അഫ്ഗാനിസ്ഥാന്‍. കൂനില്‍മേല്‍ കുരു എന്നു പറയുന്നതു പോലെ അഫ്ഗാനിലെ ജനങ്ങളെ പട്ടിണിക്കിടാന്‍ വെട്ടുകിളി കൂട്ടവുമെത്തുകയാണ്. ഇവയെ തുരത്താന്‍ ഇന്ത്യ നല്‍കിയിരിക്കുന്നത് 40,000 ടണ്‍ മാലതിയോണ്‍ എന്ന കീടനാശിനിയാണ്.
ഒരു നാടിനെ തന്നെ പട്ടണിയിലേക്ക് തള്ളിവിടാന്‍ പോന്നവയാണ് വെട്ടുകിളിക്കൂട്ടം. ഏക്കര്‍ കണക്കിന് കൃഷിയിടമെല്ലാം മിനുട്ടുകള്‍ കൊണ്ടു നശിപ്പിച്ച് നാടിന്റെ ഭക്ഷ്യസുരക്ഷയെ തന്നെ താളം തെറ്റിക്കും. പുല്‍ച്ചാടികളുടെ കുടുംബത്തില്‍പ്പെട്ടവാണ് വെട്ടുകിളികളും. ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ടു ജീവിക്കുന്ന ഇവ വേനല്‍ക്കാലത്ത് ഭക്ഷണത്തിന് ക്ഷാമമായാല്‍ പിന്നെ ഒത്തുകൂടി വലിയൊരു കൂട്ടമായി മാറും.

ഇതോടെ ഇവയുടെ ശരീരത്തില്‍ നിറത്തിനും മറ്റും വലിയ മാറ്റങ്ങളുണ്ടാകും. ഒറ്റ നിറം മാറി തവിട്ട് , മഞ്ഞ തുടങ്ങി പല നിറങ്ങളായി മാറും. ഇതോടെ പിന്നെ മനുഷ്യനെ പട്ടിണിക്കിടാനുള്ള യാത്രയ്ക്ക് തുടക്കമാകും. ഒരു ദിവസം നൂറിലേറെ കിലോമീറ്ററുകള്‍ യാത്ര ചെയ്യും. 800 കോടിയോളം വെട്ടുകിളികള്‍ വരെ ഒരു കൂട്ടത്തിലുണ്ടാകാം. ആറായിരം ആനകള്‍ കഴിക്കുന്ന ഭക്ഷണം ഇവ ഒരു ദിവസം കൊണ്ടു തിന്നു തീര്‍ക്കും. ഇപ്പോള്‍ തന്നെ മനസിലായില്ലേ ഇവയെ കൊണ്ടുള്ള ശല്യം. ആഫ്രിക്കന്‍ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലാണ് ഇവയെകൊണ്ടുള്ള പ്രധാന ശല്യം കൂടുതല്‍.
